An Important Reminder About Safety
How the Purpose of Your
Class Effects What You Do
Our concern for the safety for all the children in our
ministry flows from the love Christ has put in our hearts for
all people. It is also part of our written purpose statement.
Tag System: Each nursery & preschool child is assigned a number. The parent must
present the number tag to the teacher before picking up the child. Be strict
about this: If they left the tag elsewhere, ask them to go get it. Blame
Pastor Nate if you have to! Never leave a preschooler unattended!
Bathroom Rules: Basically, the rule is: always
prop open the bathroom door when you are in the bathroom with a
child.
An adult should accompany young preschoolers.
For older preschoolers the volunteer should check the restroom first, then wait outside the bathroom.
You can open the door and speak to the children to hurry or quiet them.
Make sure they wash their hands and flush.
Elementary students should be encouraged to go before or after class, but if it is an emergency
you should follow the guidelines below:
K-3rd graders can go without an adult, but in pairs. Pick kids that won't
get goofy together.
4th-5th graders are allowed to go by themselves. If restrooms are found
to be in great disarray, this privilege can be revoked and all children
will need to be escorted.
Emotional safety: Try very hard to
prevent name-calling. On occasion we get reports from parents about their child being teased.
All volunteers should be on the lookout for this and discipline the offender
immediately. If we truly seek to heal kids' hearts, we will take this seriously.
Proper discipline will build emotional safety as well. You can get angry, but please do
not lose your temper. Do not raise your voice. Do not demean, label or
tease your students. See the discipline policy for more information.
If the purpose of your class is:
WORSHIP then imagine what you do in the sanctuary and,
- Your GOAL is to lead the children to experience and
respond personally to god's presence
- Your MUSIC will be focused on praising God for who He
is and our response to that
- Your LESSON will focus on who God is and why He
deserves our adoration and service
- Your PRAYERS will be group prayers led by an adult or
child that focuses on worship
- ALSO the offering should be carried out as a worship
experience.
SUNDAY SCHOOL then imagine your adult Sunday school experience and,
- Your GOAL is to guide the children in interactive
Bible instruction and application
- Your MUSIC is up to you, as background, for teaching
or fellowship purposes
- Your LESSON will involve discussion, kid-kid &
kid-teacher interaction and emphasize application
- Your PRAYERS will be personal prayer requests, with
the kids praying for one another
- ALSO encourage fellowship and activity. Noise is OK
during the lesson if it's focused on the subject at hand. Get
everyone involved.
ADVENTURE CLUB then imagine a club like the scouts and,
- Your GOAL is to create a club environment that
encourages fellowship and builds character
- Your MUSIC will be more fun, silly and active than
worshipful
- Your LESSON will include a lot of discussion in small
groups
- Your PRAYERS will involve small group sharing of
requests and large group blessings
- ALSO you
want to be careful to create an environment that is welcomes visitors
