What kind of house is it?
The house is a one story wood frame construction elevated on
timber posts 12 feet above the ground.
How is the raised house accessed?
There is an exterior stairway and a lift, if needed, for
handicap access.
How large is the house?
The house is 1,035 square feet and includes 3 bedrooms, 1 bath,
laundry, kitchen and combined dining-living area. There is an
outside deck on the same level as the house.
What are the exterior finishes?
The siding is fiber cement panels with battens and wood trim.
Paint?
What are the interior finishes?
The interior walls are painted drywall. The doors and windows
have wood trim. The living area and bedrooms are carpeted. The
bath and kitchen will have vinyl tile.
What parts of the house will be pre-built in
Mansfield?
The exterior and interior walls are designed to be built in
panels about 8 feet long. The panels will be built and
pre-assembled in Mansfield. After checking for fit, the panels
will be disassembled for shipping to the site. Stairs and
railings may also be pre-built.
Is it desigend to withstand hurricanes?
Yes, its designed to withstand 150 mph winds. Additionally,
because it will be located in a low coastal plane, it will be
elevated 6' on stilts to avoid flooding
How will the house be heated & cooled?
There will be wall mounted heat pump heating and cooling units.
This eliminates the concern associated with mold developing in
duct work as well as being a very cost effective system to
install and maintain.
How will it be shipped?
Deerman Moving and Storage (a local shipping company) will be
providing warehousing space and the truck(s) needed to ship the
materials.
What kind of roof will be used?
The roof will be a standing seam metal roof. This is roof offers
the best cost and durability compromise for a hurricane area.
Will appliances be supplied?
We hope to supply the kitchen cabinets, kitchen appliances,
kitchen and bathroom fixtures....
Is the project providing the foundation/platform?
MDS and the recipients are responsible for providing the
foundation.
How will the waste system be done?
MDS and the recipients are responsible for providing the waste
system. It will be a septic system.
What is the cost of the house?
We are still developing the final estimate.
How will the electrical/plumbing be completed?
The electrical and plumbing will be completed on location in
Louisiana. In this way, proper inspections can be done to assure
that the work meets the local building code.
What furnishings will be provided as part of the
project?
That depends on the funding we have available. We hope to be
able to provide any furninshings that might be needed.
Where will the house be located?
Lake Jean Charles, LA. This is in the Mississippi delta region
in LA, South West of New Orleans.
Who are the recipients?
An elderly couple who are members of the Biloxi-Chitamacha
Indian Tribe.
